Suha Reka / NE Bulgaria 2014

During the first and the third week of May 2014 we went together with my wife to the Suha Reka area which is located in the North-East of Bulgaria. A remarkable remote area close to the Romanian boarder. We hired the self-catering cottage with in the back yard a permanent photo-tower-hide and a permanent hide at a pond.  http://www.naturetravel.eu  The tower-hide is solid and convenient and I spend there almost each morning from half an hour before dawn till 10 AM. Photographing at 8 meter height capturing the birds in the branches of an almost naked walnut-tree. The background is quiet and at a large distance. So - ideal you may say. Both hides excellently positioned to the sun. Of great use to me was the "photo calendar" indicating when to expect which specie from migration to arrive. You will find this calendar at the before mentioned webside-link and it was of great use to schedule my trip. Because I was so much focused on the photo-tower in the morning I could not find the time to visit the other hides which are placed in neighbouring villages in the morning. These were especially located to capture e.g. Bee-eaters and Rollers. Luckily these hides were good located for the afternoon / evening sun. So, not difficult to occupy myself the entire day. The location of the cottage is unique and - for sure I will return to the place. And  to try the new forest hide which will be placed in Autumn as I understood and which should be ideal in winter time to capture e.g. the Hawfinch.
